Granite or Quartz... The Worktop Dilemma

Worktops are the crowning glory of a kitchen so choosing the right one for your kitchen can seem like a daunting task. With such a wide range of worktops to choose from, it can often be overwhelming to decide on just one. Here we will discuss the different types of worktops and their pros and cons.

Granite

Granite worktops are manufactured from one solid slab of stone. In contrast to quartz, granite can often vary in colour and markings as it is a naturally occurring stone. This means that you can get beautiful markings, but they are not guaranteed to be the same through every piece of stone. This does, however, make it easier to hide the seams when fitting. A common misconception is that granite can stain from regular use but that is not true. If the worktops are sealed properly, then there is no worry about them staining.

Pros: distinct patterns, less visible seams, heat resistant.

Cons: naturally occurring inconsistencies, more expensive.

Quartz

Quartz - Quartz Worktops are made of pieces of natural Quartz bonded together with a small amount of adhesive. As these worktops are manmade, it is easy to determine the colour and markings of the slab. In some cases, the customer can even design their own pattern. Quartz is extremely hard, second only to precious stones — making it exceptionally durable and it therefore it is not easy to crack or chip. Unlike granite, due to its manmade nature, quartz worktops are non-porous and therefore do not require continuous sealing. However, though quartz is very tough, and the adhesive can withstand temperatures as high as 150 degrees, placing very hot materials such as a pan directly out of the oven onto the surface can burn the countertop and cause permanent damage.

Pros: durable, reliable pattern, wide range of colours, non-porous.

Cons: manufactured pattern, susceptible to heat.

So how do I pick?! The answer is easy – find a stone that brings you joy to look at. Both have their ups and downs but, in the end, you’re going to have this worktop for the rest of your life so what matters most is that it brings you joy. Now go out there and find your forever stone!
